Buhay Estudyante: Study Tips

So true that we plan our lives to run smoothly but we can't avoid the rough roads and humps.

When I was in high school, I always long for more time to relax and read novels. But reality bites that I  have to be good friends with Algebra, Chemistry and Trigonometry. They are challenging subjects but I learned to love them! They make all my brain cells jumping. Since I belonged to the Special Science Class, the schedule was always hectic. We already have research and thesis stuffs in our 3rd year. We all do the experiments even during vacation when other students are enjoying. It was after all an advantage when I reached College coz I met thesis again. I was already confident enough that I will be able to go through it. In fact, I did most of our study paperworks.

I took up Nursing in College. I learned to beat time all the way. I was only in freshmen when I already have to summarize the book of Florence Nightingale on a Christmas vacation.  See?  It could have been easier to have our 20+ pages Nursing Process computerized but we were required to have it  handwritten. Lectures are fast paced, books are thick and requirements can be overwhelming. I craved for more sleep! Plus I don't study on a Sabbath Day. Yes, I was tempted many times to scan books on a Sunday but eventually ignored it. Despite all these, I took everything squarely. I graduated with honors and passed the board exam.

I learned to be patient and have an optimistic view of life realizing that all will be well at the end if we endure well. The more I value my achievements and work because I worked hard to earn them.

Here are some study tips that work for me.

1. Know your learning style

Learning styles differ with each person. It is important to have a self check so that you will know how you learn best. In my case I am a visual learner. I use pens and highlighters with different colors to mark my notes. Back in nursing school I draw diagrams of disease processes so it would be easy for me to understand the different conditions. At times I can be a verbal learner. I speak as I study and write some notes.

Having a learning technique that suits you will make you enjoy studying. It will also help you to retain a good percentage of what you’re studying.

2. Make Study Time a Part of Your Daily Routine

I hate cramming. Since my elementary days I just go through the lessons for the day even without exams the follow day. Knowledge stored and recorded will always be helpful in times of need.

Consistency is the key because once you have established a good study habit it will be a part of your daily routine.

Study when it is the best time for you. Some people like to get up early and study; others prefer to do it before going to bed. The important thing is to find a time when you will be able to study every day.

3. Establish a study zone

Study in a place conducive for learning. Find your “study spot” in your room. Definitely not in bed. It is best to have a study table in a noise-free and well lighted area. Don’t be afraid to establish rules when you’re in your study zone. Let other people in your house know that you are studying. Refrain from doing the “side stuff” that will disturb your concentration like responding to text messages and checking your social media accounts.

4. Take down “quality” notes

Whatever your learning style is, always have a pen and notebook handy. The act of writing reinforces the learning process. When you write down thoughts and ideas, your mind engages with the lessons in a new way.

We live in an age where it is easy to forget because of distractions. Write down notes that you can easily scan on your free time. I want my notes to be neat. I use markers to color code important information. The color-coding system keeps my thoughts organized.

5. Have a good night rest.

It’s ineffective to study when you are sleepy because your mind can’t absorb new information. When we follow the law of health, our minds become open to new learning. I make sure I have a good sleep. A relaxed mind helps me understand and remember my lessons.

6. Begin with the end in Mind

If you only see the process of student life, then you will automatically say it's hard. But if you are trying to foresee what you can become, you'll love student life. The more you will be motivated to do good in school if you have a goal to accomplish.
